Eagles at 49ers

October 08, 2010

Once upon a time the 49ers were the favorites to win the NFC West but San Fran has come out of the block losing four straight games and is two games back of all three teams in the division. However, with the ailing Philadelphia Eagles coming to town, the opportunity is there to strike to get back in the win column for the first time in 2010.
The Eagles clearly are a different team with QB Kevin Kolb under center instead of QB Michael Vick. The man who was originally tabbed as the starter for head coach Andy Reid is now back in command of Philly's offense a month later, as Vick, who started the previous three games, is out of the lineup after suffering a jarring blow between two defenders last week.
When Kolb came into the game against the Washington Redskins, the entire dynamics of the game changed. No longer was Vick's running a threat, and whereas there were holes that might have been open for Vick to run through, Kolb was stuck either taking sacks or checking down to a tight end or a back.

In fact, there wasn't one pass completed that traveled in the air more than 20 yards down the field with Kolb calling the shots against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL, and now all of a sudden, the weapons of stretching the field with WRs DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin have been severely limited in what they can do.
Yes, RB LeSean McCoy had a good game in which he had over 100 receiving yards, but Reid would much rather see his big play receivers doing the dirty work in the passing game, not his running back.
Needless to say, despite the Eagles being tied for first place in the NFC East at 2-2 SU, the fact that they are a 1-3 ATS team and that their better option at quarterback is injured could easily draw the ire of NFL betting fans on Sunday Night Football.
The 49ers might be winless, but at least they weren't heartless last week against the Atlanta Falcons. They jumped out of the blocks up two scores and hung on for a cover, but when push came to shove, it was a Matt Bryant field goal with time expiring that did San Fran in for the fourth time this year.
After two more picks by QB Alex Smith, the pressure is really on the former No. 1 overall draft selection to shine, or head coach Mike Singletary is going to have to make the switch to QB David Carr, also a former No.1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

At just 13.0 PPG, San Francisco ranks second to last in the NFL in scoring. An offensive line that is chock full of first and early second round draft choices was supposed to be able to open up holes for RB Frank Gore, but that just hasn't been the case either. Gore actually has almost as many receiving yards (263) as he does rushing yards (270), which isn't good for the Niners and their No. 28 ranked rushing attack (78.8 YPG).
Yet the NFL oddsmakers at Pinnacle Sportsbook have still made the winless squad in this battle 3 ½-point favorites on Sunday Night Football. The football betting line also features a 'total' of 38.
The Eagles have dominated this series in recent years, going 4-0 SU and ATS against the Niners since 2005. The men from the City of Brotherly Love have averaged outscoring San Fran 37-17 in those four tussles.
