Cowboys, Jags down to backup QBs

October 26, 2010

When the injury report came out for Sunday's Week 8 NFL betting affair between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys, there were five quarterbacks on it.
For the Cowboys, we already know that the pigskin is officially property of QB Jon Kitna. Kitna came in last week against the New York Giants on Monday Night Footballhttp://www.donbest.com/nfl/nfl-odds-desperate-dallas-hosts-giants-a-11416.html when QB Tony Romo broke his clavicle. The injury is going to cost the Dallas gunslinger at least the next month and a half and potentially the rest of his season.
Truth be told, it might not matter anymore for Dallas anyway. The Cowboys sit at 1-5 SU and ATS, giving it the worst ATS record in the game and one of the worst SU marks as well. They need a real miracle to be able to hop over the 4-3 Philadelphia Eagles, 4-3 Washington Redskins, and 5-2 New York Giants in the NFC East, and the prospects of running down a Wild Card berth are virtually as grim.
The only good news for Wade Phillips and company is that Kitna did play well down the stretch against the G-Men, throwing two TD passes and nearly leading the team all the way back from a three score deficit to win it. He finished the day going 16-of-33 for 187 yards.
Needless to say, there is going to be plenty of pressure on a Dallas rushing attack that ranks just No. 30 in the league. Running backs Felix Jones and Marion Barber have only combined for 445 yards in six games this year, and Tashard Choice has been completely missing in action. As a team, the Cowboys still only have one rushing touchdown for the year.
Jacksonville's quarterback situation is significantly more interesting. The Jags are certainly without Luke McCown, who is on IR. Trent Edwards has a thumb injury, while Todd Bouman, last week's starter, has a banged up finger as well. If he is healthy though, David Garrard is going to be the man getting the call in this crucial game for the Jags.
Garrard suffered a concussion two weeks ago against the Tennessee Titans, and though he is listed as probable, when you are dealing with concussions, you never know what you're going to be getting as the week wears on.
One thing is for certain though, and that's that the 'D' for Jacksonville just has to improve. This is the only team in the NFL that has allowed more than 200 points on the season, and it ranks third to last in the league in total defense at a whopping 382.1 yards per game. Since "holding" the Denver Broncos to just 17 points in Week 1, every team has scored at least 26 against the Jags, including last week's embarrassing 42-20 defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Just like the Cowboys, Jacksonville has had all sorts of problems finding the end zone on the ground this year. Maurice Jones-Drew has scored once and does have 510 yards in just seven games, but aside from that, the rest of the team only has one rushing TD.
These two teams don't meet all that often, but when they have, the edge has gone to the home team. The hosts are 4-0 SU and ATS all time in this series, with the Jags winning the most recent encounter 24-17 in the Sunshine State.
In spite of the fact that the team is just 1-5 and is playing with a backup quarterback, Dallas has been lined as a seven-point favorite at Bodog. The 'total' chimes in at 42 ½.
