Spartans hurting after two-loss week

By Willie Bee | Sunday, February 7, 2010

Kalin Lucas' bad ankle could keep him out of Tuesday's game vs. Purdue.

The No. 1 team in the land held firm this past week, but No. 2 didn't fare so well and a former No. 1 is certain to be exiled from the top-10 listings when the polls are updated on Monday.

Kansas picked up two wins on the floor to move to 22-1 straight up on the season.  But the victories on the road in Colorado and home against Nebraska were both losers at the window.

Villanova, second in both The Associated Press and coaches rankings last week, also dropped two games against the spread when they beat Seton Hall 81-71 as 10 ½-point home chalk and lost 103-90 at No. 7 Georgetown on Saturday as two-point underdogs.

The Texas Longhorns stopped an eight-game ATS slide with an impressive 72-60 triumph as 2 ½-point favorites at Oklahoma State early in the week.  Alas, the 'Horns followed that with a very sloppy performance in Norman where Oklahoma celebrated an 80-71 victory as 6 ½-point home dogs.

The worst of times fell on Michigan State with the Spartans on the road for two Big Ten contests in recent days, losing both of them after opening the conference campaign with a perfect 9-0 record.  Wisconsin, installed as two-point home chalk, embarrassed State on Tuesday, 67-49; Illinois (1 ½-point home pups) finished the Spartans' tough week off on Saturday, 78-73.

And to think, we've just made it through the first week of February meaning there's going to be a lot more of this to come.

Here's a look at where the top-11 squads in last week's AP poll will be over the next seven days.  1.

Kansas (22-1 SU, 9-10-1 ATS)
The Jayhawks open the week on Monday (Feb. 8) down in Austin facing the Longhorns.  Kansas won and covered at home last season, but lost as chalk the last time it was on the floor in Austin back in Feb. 2008.  The Jayhawks will be back home on Saturday (Feb. 13) in a rematch vs. Iowa St.  The two met in Ames on Jan. 23 with Kansas winning 84-61 as an 11-point road favorite.

2. Villanova (20-2, 15-6)
The Wildcats have no time to lick their wounds from the loss at the Hoyas.  'Nova dives right from the frying pan into the fire when it visits No. 6 West Virginia on Monday.  The Mountaineers are 6-3 SU and ATS in this series recently, including last year's 83-72 win at home as 4 ½-point favorites.  Villanova returns home on Saturday to face Providence.

3. Syracuse (23-1, 15-5)
'Cuse has two home dates on its card this week with UConn in town on Wednesday (Feb 10) followed by Louisville on Sunday (Feb. 14).

4. Kentucky (22-1, 11-10)
John Calipari's crew gets its first look at a couple of SEC rivals with a home contest vs. Alabama on Tuesday and a trip to Knoxville on Saturday to meet Tennessee.

5. Michigan State (19-5, 8-15)
A Big Ten showdown takes place on Tuesday when the Spartans host No. 8 Purdue.  The two teams split their series last season, each winning and covering at home.  MSU will be at Penn State this Saturday.

6. West Virginia (19-3, 9-12)
The Mountaineers will host Villanova and then hit the road to face No. 22 Pitt on Friday (Feb 12).  WVU just topped the Panthers (Feb. 3), 70-51, carrying 10-point home chalk.

7. Georgetown (17-5, 10-8)
A big win at home over Villanova in their pocket, the Hoyas head out on the Big East highway this week at Providence on Tuesday (Feb. 9) and Rutgers on Sunday.  Georgetown already owns a win over the Scarlet Knights, an 88-63 rout in DC on Jan. 23 as an 18-point favorite.

8. Purdue (19-3, 10-12)
The Boilermakers' contest at Michigan State on Tuesday is followed by return home to host Iowa.  Purdue cracked the Hawkeyes on their own floor at the end of December, 67-56, failing to cover the 14-point line.

9. Texas (19-4, 9-10)
You think Rick Barnes is adding some extra free throw practice into the schedule?  The Longhorns will be at home for two games this week, with Monday's crucial match against No. 1 Kansas followed by Nebraska coming to Erwin Center on Saturday.

10. Kansas State (19-4, 13-5)
The Wildcats have just one battle on their hands this week when they host Colorado at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday. K-State enjoyed an easy winner over the 'Huskers in Lincoln on Feb. 2, coasting 76-57 as four-point road chalk.

10. Duke (19-4, 14-8)
North Carolina may be struggling, but that won't mean much to the coaches, players or fans at Wednesday's game in Chapel Hill against the Blue Devils.  Duke has lost its last three to UNC, including a 79-71 decision at Smith Center last March that was a push on the eight-point line.  The Blue Devils will follow this week's UNC trip with a Saturday clash at home against Maryland.
